The Traverse Area Model Pilots air field is located off of Youker Road, by the compost disposal area. A number of years ago, the 75 member club cleared and improved the former township dump and made it into a model airplane flying field. The club has 4 airplanes for the public to fly. Those wanting to learn how to fly are encouraged to come for free instruction on Tuesday evenings.
Since the 1970’s when the former dump closed, the area was left with scattered debris, and mounds from the buried materials. This area located at the end of the north/south runway had become over grown with thorny locust trees and many adjacent oak trees had died of oak wilt. After obtaining approval from the township, the club members along with many volunteers and businesses contributed with many hours of time to fix this area up. The flying field is now complete with sprinklers and grass runways, which are mowed weekly. For those looking for more information, go to Traverse Model Pilots.com On Interlochen Community Day, we again will have pilots available for instructing, with open flying of the members for all to watch.
